Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (model N23Q18) no sound
Hi all,
Have the above mentioned Chromebook (the i3-N305 one) that I with the help of mrchromebox and a SusieQ managed to liberate from the clutches of Chrome OS and onto which I installed Debian.
Everything during the installation went without any hiccups, however once I started using it there is no sound. Afaik this is purely an issue with the built in audio card as for example my bluetooth earbuds connected just fine and played sound. I am able to see the sound card in settings > audio (see image) but that's as far as that goes - can not active or use.
Appreciate any help.

Re: Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (model N23Q18) no sound
These two lines suggest the system is having a problem identifying the hardware, which, as Bookworm is getting a bit long in the tooth, and your laptop seems to be a recent model, is not really surprising.ivar0 wrote: 2025-02-02 07:25 Feb 02 08:19:31 debian kernel: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: NHLT table not found

The first thing I would try is a newer kernel from Debian Backports.
https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/
Could you try booting with a newer kernel and re-running the journalctl command? (The newer kernel may also require other sound files to be updated, but let's see what it says.
Re: Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (model N23Q18) no sound
The instructions beyond adding the Backports repository was unclear, so I found several tutorials. Several times I ended up having a busted wifi driver with no clue how to fix that, I reinstalled Debian anew. Had several attempts doing that - and during many reinstalls for some reason sometimes the installer detected a wifi card some times it didn't. From literally the same USB stick with same image flashed.
Then I followed this this tutorial and ended up having the computer freeze right after entering user password at login (clean install first boot),
So either I am doing something horribly wrong or "backports" does not work with this machine. Very much lost now.

Random person on the internet is doing something horribly wrong, I'm afraid. The Debian pages do warn against this.
Backports cannot be tested as extensively as Debian stable, and backports are provided on an as-is basis, with risk of incompatibilities with other components in Debian stable. Use with care!
It is therefore recommended to only select single backported packages that fit your needs, and not use all available backports.
I think you may to reinstall if you followed the advice in this video,Backports cannot be tested as extensively as Debian stable, and are thus supported on a best-effort basis; there is a risk of incompatibilities with other components in Debian stable, so backports should be used with care! That said, Debian Backports Policy does not allow backports of libraries that would break all dependent packages in stable (eg: new Qt 5.x releases), and by virtue of this, Debian Backports are considered generally safe when used as intended on an individual package basis.
The coinstallability of all available backports is not tested, and it is strongly recommended to opt-into the use of specific backported packages on an as-needed basis.

I became the "instructions unclear, got d*ck stuck in the CD drive" meme.
So what exactly should I do? Pardon for asking maybe things that are naive, but I am not that keen using Linux.
And while I am at it - for windows such an issue would be solved installing proper drivers. Not the same with Debian?

Re: Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (model N23Q18) no sound
It depends if you actually followed the advice in that YouTube video to install everything from Backports. (Backports contains hundreds of updated packages intended to fix specific issues in specific packages. Many of those packages you will not have on your system, so installing everything wastes a lot of space, may introduce bugs in packages that were working fine on your hardware in Bookworm, or will install alternative packages alongside existing packages with the same function causing conflicts.) If you did, a clean install would probably the only way to get back to a stable system.ivar0 wrote: 2025-02-04 08:44 I became the "instructions unclear, got d*ck stuck in the CD drive" meme.

Drivers for sound cards etc may available, and work with those devices. indeed the manufacturer may even produce open-source drivers. The problem is quite often with firmware and configuration information.
Computers with a sound device with a working driver may not actually produce sound because the computer manufacturer has configured the hardware in a way that Linux cannot recognise, supplying that information to the OS in software form that Linux does not have access to. This applies to machines shipped with Google Chromebook, Windows and also Ubuntu.
In a case like this, the missing configuration information has to be added to the Linux kernel as a "quirk" - a patch to deal with a peculiar hardware setup.
This process takes some time, and newer kernel do not get added to Debian Stable, which is now approaching two years into its release, so Bookworm will not have the configuration information for many newer computers, especially quirky sound sets ups like Chromebook.
Which is why in Debian Bookworm if sound isn't working, it's often necessary to update the kernel to get sound working. (In Windows I believe hardware quirks are fixed in the drivers, yes.)
It's possible that working sound may also require more up to date firmware than is present in Bookworm, or sound configuration files in addition to the kernel, but a newer kernel can sometimes work.
This at least is my understanding of the subject. I don't work in the area or have a technical background, it's just what I have surmised from helping people with issues.
Re: Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (model N23Q18) no sound
Allright then. What would be the correct method of installing a new kernel and that alone?

Once you have added the repository, run
or
depending on your preference.
This will get you the latest kernel. Reboot and see what happens. As mentioned in post #6, supply the journalctl output with the new kernel is sound is still not working.

As your laptop seems to be a fairly new model, and the Bookworm release is long in the tooth, the simplest thing to do would be to try booting from a Debian Testing live image on a USB.
It is possible that with the additional updated sound configuration and firmware files in Trixie, everything may just work. In which case, we could work backwards and update some components of Bookworm.

Re: Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (model N23Q18) no sound
Hi
Not that it matters, but most of what follows is true...
Developer Mode can be troublesome on Chromebooks.
Sound not working is quite normal.
I tried multiple Distro's on an AMD unit and 100% nada.
Sorry but it may never happen.

Tried "Junior" which I assume is "Trixie", could not install (got recurring errors about hard drive partitioning problems), booted "live" image instead. No sound.FreewheelinFrank wrote: 2025-02-05 07:10

FYI also tried Kubuntu just for fun - it did manage to live boot with sound but failed to install in the end of the installation when I tried doing that, and the installation took absolutely forever (like 30+ mins).
I am thankful for the help thus far, but the experimenting back and forth takes so much time I'll just leave it at that and if need be use bluetooth headset/buds because those worked at the very least. I assume if newer drivers are implemented in the stable release that those may at some point arrive on a standard Debian install, eventually.

I understand how frustrating it is. Here are a few ideas just in case you decide to have another go later on, or for others with the same Chromebook.ivar0 wrote: 2025-02-05 23:20 Tried "Junior" which I assume is "Trixie", could not install (got recurring errors about hard drive partitioning problems), booted "live" image instead. Yes, support for newer Chromebooks works its way into Debian eventually. As I said before, it's not only drivers but also configuration of the hardware.
It's interesting that sound works in Ubuntu. Perhaps Ubuntu is using some Google code that Debian would not allow? (More on that in a bit.)
I found a script which is intended to enable audio support in Linux, and have been looking through it.
https://github.com/WeirdTreeThing/chrom ... /tree/main
It does a number of things:
-install Pipewire
-Install wireplumber config for dmic if wireplumber is installed on the system
-install firmware and sound configuration files from latest sources
-check hardware
-suggest appropriate driver
-apply some configuration hacks
-install a custom kernel for Debian
Some interesting points there.
Debian KDE uses Pulseaudio, which may not work with Chromebooks.
https://www.quantulum.co.uk/blog/debian ... hromebook/
The new Intel AVS driver available in newer kernels may support Chromebooks better than the SOF driver, but on some hardware it can be too loud.
Kernel level support in newer Chromebooks may require a patched kernel with special Google modules. (Is this why Ubuntu works?) But these patches become obsolete as support is added to Linux kernels. And any update to the Debian kernel would replace the patched kernel, losing sound again, so you would have to uninstall the Debian kernel package to prevent this.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Chrome_OS_devicesIt is recommended to use the official linux package for most Chrome OS devices with the exception being newer devices which might need patched kernel support.
If your devices requires a patched kernel, it is advised to review the list of patches and decide if the patch list is getting decidedly small enough that you no longer require a patched kernel and instead you can use the official linux package instead.
One option for anybody with time to experiment would be to try the steps above with the latest kernel from Debian - Pipewire, AVS driver (with caution), latest firmware etc.
Of course, you could run the script and see if it works for you. It seems OK, but obviously that would be at your own risk.
The final option would be to wait for support to arrive in a future release, which may take some time, but at least you have other sound option in the meantime.
Edit - correction: re-reading the script, it actually says "Install wireplumber config for dmic if wireplumber is installed on the system", which does not mean it will install pipewire.
Re: Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (model N23Q18) no sound
Allright I will try that after installing Debian again. Now I did succeed (finally) installing Kubuntu. Is it of any interest to run those diagnostic commands before installing Debian to see how/why sound runs on Kununtu?
