Repeated crashes

#1 Post by Emmyth »

Hi, I have installed debian 12 since about a month and I've had a lot of crashing, it occurs at random times without obvious inciting incident, it happens around once a day. For some days I have registered the journalctl (I used sudo journalctl --since 'the time it happened') logs around the incident and can't find a common thing. I'm kinda tech savy but have no expertise in the domain and I'm struggling figuring out what to do. I'll put the logs here, if anyone has an idea what it is, hardware or software it'd be great help, thank you very much :

This is all I have saved, there were more crashes. Once Discord was involved, using the browser based version seemed to diminush the crashes. Every time I have to force (physically) reboot my computer as it completely freezes. Once rebooted it works with no problem until the next crash, I had the exact same hardware before on windows without that problem (other problems yes, but not this one). The logs are each time until the reboot appears in the logs.

Hello and welcome!

What Debian installation media you used?

Install package inxi and then run in terminal

Code: Select all

arto@dell:~$ inxi -Fxxxmprz
System:
  Kernel: 6.1.0-10-amd64 arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 12.2.0

    wm: xfwm v: 4.18.0 vt: 1 dm: xinit Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 12 ....
Post the output, prefrerably in code block, as I did above, the fihtht item, black box, in the top line which starts with 'B'.

No 'sudo' or root needed here

And using the 'Full Editor' you can attach your printouts ...

You have multiple 3rd party sources.

https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian

I suggest installing again, usind only Debian repos.

Hello @Emmyth,
Emmyth wrote: 2025-02-15 16:54 Hi, I have installed debian 12 since about a month and I've had a lot of crashing, it occurs at random times without obvious inciting incident, it happens around once a day.

Every time I have to force (physically) reboot my computer as it completely freezes. Once rebooted it works with no problem until the next crash

In your previous logs, it seems to me that there are three types of events recorded:

a) a kernel NULL pointer dereference generated in the kernel while running Firefox "in user space" (related to a page fault in the kernel: the kernel was unable to recover a page of memory from swap ?): it is an error message by the kernel

b) an exception from the kernel scheduler and the RCU work queue (an algorithm used to handle memory used by the kernel, so in "kernel space"): it is an error message by the kernel

c) an unreadable disk error (for the disk named TOSHIBA_MQ01ABD100_X62NT2YST, your second disk) and it is an error message by the kernel :

Code: Select all

févr. 11 23:41:53 Emmyth kernel: ata1.00: qc timeout after 30000 msecs (cmd 0xec)
févr. 11 23:41:53 Emmyth kernel: ata1.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)

So, something is causing these errors in the kernel.

According to the logs, you did not install external kernel modules (the kernel is not "tainted"). So, some kernel module maybe be at fault. A memory handling error could cause at least two of these three faults, too.

I would suggest (once a time):
1) use KDE with the X server (instead of the Wayland server): you can use the desktop manager KDM to do it

2) disabling the swap memory a verify if it helps; you can do it temporarily using the command:

Code: Select all

sudo swapoff -a
3) You can then check the health of your TOSHIBA_MQ01ABD100_X62NT2YST disk, and possibly disconnect it to see if that helps.

There may be other causes that you have not found in the system logs, of course (like incompatible libraries installed from third parties, as @arzgi advised in previous post).

Hope this helps.
