Error when installing RustDesk

#1 Post by kjellinux »

I installed Debian 12 stable with Gnome desktop environment on an Acer Aspire One D255E. I downloaded the .deb file for RustDesk and got the following error message:

Skärmbild från 2024-10-20 21-32-30.png
Skärmbild från 2024-10-20 21-32-30.png (16.28 KiB) Viewed 391 times
What's wrong? How can I fix it?

I tried using inxi to provide system information, but it doesn't appear to be available. What's the standard way to provide system information in this forum?

RustDesk is not in Debian repositories. Where did you get it?

Well, inxi is certainly in the repositories.

Giving us the output of

Code: Select all

apt policy
apt policy inxi

(in text inside code tags is preferred instead of a screenshot)

could help us find out why you don't seem to be able to get it.

When trying to install inxi, I get

Code: Select all

Mediabyte: Insert the record with label
 ”Debian GNU/Linux 12.7.0 _Bookworm_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 with firmware 20240831-10:40”
in unit ”/media/cdrom/” and press [Return]
I used a USB to install Debian. I have no DVD and no optical drive. I tried inserting the USB, but it did not work.

Code: Select all

Seems like you are not connected to the internet or your sources still include the entry for the install image. inxi certainly is in the repos.
Show us your sources, post:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Edit your sources list as root or sudo and comment out the cdrom line but putting a hash mark in front like this:

Code: Select all

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 12.7.0 _Bookworm_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 with firmware 20240831-10:40]/ bookworm contrib main non-free-firmware
Then do apt update and you should be able to install from the online repos.
You should also do apt upgrade to update the system.

Does RustDesk install now? Open a terminal in the directory containing the .deb and do (as root or sudo):

Code: Select all

apt install ./rustdesk-1.3.1-x86_64.deb
Usually for issues related to non-repo packages you need to ask the source, in this case open an issue at the Github code site. I doubt many people here know or use RustDesk.

Re: Error when installing RustDesk

You have the wrong install file. Your system is 64-bit Atom processor but you have installed Debian 32-bit (i386) on it. This should be ok but the .deb file you have is for armv7 (armhf) architecture, totally incompatible.
I don't see a download for i386 version of RustDesk on Github so you may be trying something impossible.
You could try installing the standard version of Debian 64-bit (amd64/x86-64) but I read that some Atom systems use a 32-bit UEFI so that can be a hassle as well.
Or maybe you could enable multiarch for amd64 on your system and use the rustdesk-1.3.1-x86_64.deb package. https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/HOWTO This is theoretical for me, maybe you need to sacrifice a puppy as well.

Hopefully someone more knowledgable on this can chime in with suggestions.

Re: Error when installing RustDesk

#16 Post by kjellinux »

After realizing I had installed a 32 bit .iso on a 64 bit machine, I have now redone the installation. I also found an article on How to Install RustDesk on Debian Latest. The url in step 3 in the article is no longer valid, so I downloaded a 64 bit .deb file from RustDesk GitHub. Following the article I got the following results.
