This upgrade seems to be a little bit earlier than normal since Linus has not released the 6.12 kernel yet, only rc2. Thanks a whole lot to our hard working Debian developers!

Meanwhile, migration of GNOME from 46 to 47 continues.

The following screenshot was taken from a remasterized Sid live usb, which is essentially a "disposable" system:

It shows both the 6.11 Linux kernel and GNOME 47. I am not too concerned about kernel upgrade, but GNOME upgrade could cause incompatibility with extensions. So far, so knock-on-wood!

Yesterday (or the day bf?) the Linux kernel in Sid moved to version 6.6.13. To me at the least, the dizzying version number changes actually indicate the incredible amounts of efforts that our hardworking Debian developers have been trying to so aggressively keep Sid a leading (but definitely not bleeding!) edge OS. Probably as a result thereof, the stable version of Debian, currently bkworm, can actually keep up very well with very recent hardware advancements.

Recently we bought a Ryzen 7 5700U (with Radeon Vega 8 GPU) mini-PC, as shown in the attached screenshot:

we are so amazed with the performance of bkworm on this machine! (Sid also works great) Measuring 12.5 x 11 x 4 (cm), it is more powerful than my current bulky desktop machine that we purchased only less than 3 years ago. And costs only a fraction of it ($280 vs over $1K).

Our office is budgeted to upgrade two pcs this year. If this mini-pc continues to run well, with the money saved, I may be able to convince my boss to purchase a couple of extras and donate them to some of our forum elders to help bkworm/sid developments. In the past, the shipping cost is prohibitive for any hardware donation (especially for international shipping).

That new kernel from Debian continues to cause black screens (I must use the old kernel 6.1.0 !)

The kernel vmlinuz-6.8.0-31-generic does from Gentoo and all the kernel from Ubuntu Noble 2024.04 since middle of November 2023 not ! I think, Debian hat great problems...

I is now a unsecure (as you can't continue to work if that happens: installing through the only one installer known by Debian, the uggly old Debian installer, you can't decide at installations time which kernel you will get and after that, black screen and no way to continue to work. Thank you very much...

Linux kernel 6.9 has been EOL'd; accordingly Sid is now moved to the 6.10 kernel. However, some components of GNOME are being withheld from upgrade at the present time:

These GNOME components are now fully upgraded with the "apt full-upgrade" command. From our own experience, running apt full-upgrade can cause system to crash or mis-behave especially when running GNOME extensions. It is important to run this command on a test machine with full backup.

I am not too concerned about kernel upgrade, but GNOME upgrade could cause incompatibility with extensions. So far, so knock-on-wood!

Things have been running very smoothly with the remasterized Sid live usb, thus I decided to do the upgrade on an installed system*. Looks easy and straightforward, but, believe me, this is no small feat! Again, thanks a whole lot to those who make this happen!

Ubuntu 24.10 was announced today to include kernel 6.11, but there is no smooth upgrading path from the 24.04 LTS to 24.10. From my experience, Ubuntu 24.04 users will eventually get to upgrade to the 6.11 kernel via the hwe path, but I don't think the hwe kernel is covered under the LTS (???)

*Actually I have been using the remasterized Sid live usb, without persistence, to do daily chores for quite some time now. But it is still an obligatory thing to do the upgrade on the installed system.
