#1 Post by your account is »

Hi
I dont want offend everyone. Is there some easy way to get Debian look like Win7? Like a normal Taskbar on the Bottom? For me its a bit annoying to move the Mouse always to an corner to open the Software Menu.

I think you'd probably like KDE more than the default desktop.

1. How do you open the Win 7?
2. What desktop do you have now?

1 more vote for KDE Plasma which was designed by the hand of God who also made peanut butter...the preferred sandwich/biscuit spread of the Gods.
Typo perfectionish.

Nah, I'm not a God because I like peanut butter. On the other hand, Vegemite has already earned its place in heaven.

Yeah, KDE Plasma. Put the Panel wherever you like and your choice of menu apps wherever you like in whichever panel. And then there are what seems like a limitless number of themes, quite a few of which emulate Win7. Don't like one part of it? Change it, easy.

There are YouTube videos on how to accomplish that with KDE Plasma.

Personally, I would go for XFCE: it is extremely well configurable and can be made a complete lookalike of almost any desktop system, even MacOS X and any Windows.

I fully agree. Xfce easily will fulfill all your needs. It is highly configurable and flexible yet not overloaded with options. Besides that, you can have as many panels as you want and place them wherever you like. There are lots of appearance themes to adjust the look and feel, colors, or the shape of buttons and more. All in all much more powerful than what Win7 ever did offer.

It's unfortunate that Debian has GNOME as default desktop as it is a bad surprise for anyone coming from Windows, ie the most of the new users of Debian. It puts you in the hassle of installing and removing desktops or reinstalling Debian with the right desktop.

And what about the users who don't make questions in the forums? They may think that Debian is GNOME and that's it. Developers should reconsider this

You may first want to try alternative desktop environments from a Live ISO without installing. Later on, you can install Debian right from the Live session. The calamares installer is very user friendly. It might even be possible to only install the other DE parallel to Gnome, but with this, I have no experience.

@Diesel330: Yes, it is a pity. Even the toolkit, Gtk, gets more and more Gnome centered. I have no idea why Gnome is being preferred by so many distributions as the first choice.
