Touchpad not detected in KDE's GUI

Having updated the system today after more than a month's absence, the touchpad didn't work properly and was no longer detected in SystemSettings. It has basic functionality, but things like two finger scroll stopped working. Pressing the middle of the touchpad normally counts as a left click, but it doesn't work.

Any ideas on how to solve this? Please keep in mind that my T440s has a touch screen, so the touchpad has been flaky at times.

I don't know if it applies yo your situation, but I recently had (post kernel upgrade) issues with the synaptics touchpad/trackpoint on my old X230, where it reverted to reporting as a single generic "mouse" (passthrough) device rather than 2 separate inputs, with similar results (i.e. no touchpad specific controls).
IIRC (machine is currently elsewhere) 'options psmouse synaptics_intertouch=1' was the magic sauce (psmouse is loaded in the initrd, so /etc/modprobe.d/foo, update-initramfs, yada, yada).
