NEW: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/

#1 Post by MikeLieberman »

I was asked to resurrect at older system that has been on the shelf for a bit. It was running 11.7 and I upgraded it to 12.5.. But the onboard NIC isn't working. I am using a USB NIC right now.

The upgrade announced it was missing /lib/firmware/i915/

I had put in the nonfree-firmware in the sources.list and a search for i915 and get this.

Code: Select all

firmware-misc-nonfree/now 20210315-3 all [installed,local]
Binary firmware for various drivers in the Linux kernel

xserver-xorg-video-intel/stable,now 2:2.99.917+git20210115-1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
  X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver
So it is there but not there. The system will not allow me to reinstall. Suggestions?

I ran "sudo update-initramfs -u"

Code: Select all

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.1.0-21-amd64

Your sources should read non-free-firmware, not nonfree-firmware.
the current version of firmware-misc-nonfree is 20230210-5 - https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/fi ... sc-nonfree
Your NIC appears to be Realtek which requires firmware-realtek also from non-free-firmware - https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/firmware-realtek

And your graphics firmware files appear to be in the linux-firmware package.

Code: Select all

zeus@9600k:~$ apt-file search i915/ehl_guc_70.1.1.bin
linux-firmware: /lib/firmware/i915/ehl_guc_70.1.1.bin.zst
zeus@9600k:~$ apt-file search i915/adlp_guc_70.1.1.bin
linux-firmware: /lib/firmware/i915/adlp_guc_70.1.1.bin.zst

Maybe they are in ubuntu, but linux-firmware is not a Debian package. There is a firmware-linux package in Debian but it is a metapackage which depends on other metapackages, including firmware-misc-nonfree which provides the i915 firmware.
Searching on Debian shows:

Code: Select all

$ apt-file search i915/ehl_guc_70.1.1.bin
firmware-misc-nonfree: /lib/firmware/i915/ehl_guc_70.1.1.bin

No doubt would not be the first time them clowns have changed the package name to mess people about.
