[Software] Monitor power off fixed, but usb wake after sleep not working

#1 Post by ramack »

Even before I dist-upgraded to Bookworm Stable my monitor would blank after inactivity, but not completely "off". It wouldn't completely power off so that when my room was dark, there would still be a glow from my LCD monitor.

After finding the thread below on xfce.org's forum
https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=13545

and executing
xset s blank

The screen does now blank, which is what I was trying to solve, but now I have created another problem. When I put the desktop to sleep, it no longer wakes from hardwired USB keyboard or wireless mouse inputs as it did prior to the xset command and now I'm trying to get it back to waking from mouse input (movement or button) and/or keyboard input. Presently, the only way I can wake the PC is to press the power button.

Edited to add that my DE is xfce

Before making any other changes after running xset all usb ports were already disabled.

/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb10/power/wakeup:disabled
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb11/power/wakeup:disabled
I first enabled all the above devices and put the PC to sleep. Right after going to sleep it would wake. Going down the devices sequentially and enabling only one at a time, it would wake right after putting to sleep when usb1 through usb6 was enabled. During the enabling of this first group, power to the usb hub that the USB mouse dongle is plugged into was lost when wakened by the power button. To regain power, I had to remove the usb cable to the hub and plug it back in. When usb7 through usb11 was enabled sequentially, it would not wake right after going to sleep and was woken by press the power button. Once fully awake and back to the desktop, power was restored to the usb hub.

Not really ever noticing the power state of the USB hub after the PC was in sleep mode, I would assume that power was not removed from the hub, but that's just a guess.

The xset command had to have done more than blank the monitor. I've tried the inverse of xset s blank, xset s noblank, but that has not affect on the waking. I have not tried making wake up rules as I think that's going down the wrong cow path since usb input had worked to wake from sleep mode.

Anyone have ideas on how to "fix" this?
Thanks,

You could try looking at:

/proc/acpi/wakeup

If you cat it, you can see all of the current states:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
Device	S-state Status Sysfs node
GLAN S4	*disabled
XHC S0	*enabled pci:0000:00:14.0
XDCI S4	*disabled
HDAS S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:1f.3
To toggle one of them, you can do something like this:

Code: Select all

echo XHC > /proc/acpi/wakeup

Running what you've suggested produces the output below.

Do any of the lines labelled as pci in your list, correlate to a usb controller when you run lspci?

Code: Select all

cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
Device	S-state Status Sysfs node
SBAZ S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:14.2
Just as an example if 00:14.2 above did, it is currently showing as disabled as a wake up source, so you can toggle it with (as root):

Code: Select all

# echo SBAZ > /proc/acpi/wakeup

Using acpitool I toggled the status of the Devices that are related to the usb controller, hub, and keyboard, one by one. No effect. So I went through all the devices that were disabled and enabled them. Still not waking from sleep when the keyboard or mouse has input.

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
Device	S-state Status Sysfs node
SBAZ S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:14.2
PS2K S3	*disabled
PS2M S3	*disabled

UHC4 S4	*enabled pci:0000:00:13.2
UHC6 S4	*enabled pci:0000:00:16.2
UHC7 S4	*enabled pci:0000:00:14.5
PC02 S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:02.0
PC03 S4	*disabled
PC04 S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:04.0
PC05 S4	*disabled
PC06 S4	*disabled
PC07 S4	*disabled
PC09 S4	*disabled
PC0A S4	*disabled
PC0B S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:0b.0
PC0C S4	*disabled
PC0D S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:0d.0
PE20 S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:15.0
PE21 S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:15.1
PE22 S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:15.2
PE23 S4	*disabled pci:0000:00:15.3
USB3 S4	*enabled pci:0000:00:13.0
USB5 S4	*enabled pci:0000:00:16.0
PWRB S4	*enabled platform:PNP0C0C:00
One thing that I did stumble upon as I was toggling the status of devices, there was one time that I pressed the keyboard before it had fully gone to sleep, but had started the process. When I pressed a key, the PC woke up. Without changing any states or status, I put it back in sleep and had to wake with the power button.

I've rebooted to get a "fresh" and shorter output for dmesg since this desktop will stay up for weeks.
