Firefox updated to Vers. 59 this morning.
I'm running from their non-installed download; the update just snapped right in.

Re: Upcoming Debian 9 Update (9.4)
Re-installed Stretch using 9.4 image, no problems whatsoever. It's hard to cure my distro-hopping "illness", but if anything can cure it, it's Debian.
Thank you for this solid rock in the middle of an ocean.

The Mint forums are utter garbage. I'm guilty of posting there myself but the [now deleted] "let's respect everyone's gender identity" thread was the last straw. It's a huge community with over 50 subfora but the problem with that is that there are too many unknowledgeable posters and a large amount of pointless attention-seeking contributions. The official Slackware forums on LQ are a nice example of the other end of the scale: one subforum for installation, one for ARM and one for general support, that's it. People ask specific, targeted questions and help is always forthcoming from the very knowledgable and articulate userbase. There is no 'fluff' [though there is currently a beer thread but that's fun].mike acker wrote:
no activity on the MINT board.
I won't. If you're using an i3/i5/i7 you have even less privacy than if you're using one of the older processors. I currently run a 2.6 Ghz quad-core Q8400 on my Debian box, which is absolutely fine for my needs and still makes mincemeat out of whatever I throw at it. Whenever I upgrade, probably in years to come, it will likely be to a QX9770, which is 3.2Ghz.mike acker wrote:At some point we will all want to move on to the next generation of chips.

I settled on Debian a while back and use virtualbox for my distro-hopping fix. Best of both worldsWheelerof4te wrote:Re-installed Stretch using 9.4 image, no problems whatsoever. It's hard to cure my distro-hopping "illness", but if anything can cure it, it's Debian.

Re: Upcoming Debian 9 Update (9.4)
This morning I started a fresh build for my wife, this time I used the "firmware-9.4.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso" and selected Mate desktop ... it went quite well, faster than using "debian-live-9.4.0-amd64-mate+nonfree.iso" as I have in the past. The big download was worth the effort.sdibaja wrote:I guess new ISOs will be available in a week or two
update: bad guess. new ISOs are delivered:
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... -firmware/
(I am replacing SolydX- with mate, that replaced her LMDE2 Mate that was totally borked by Mint's infamous May 1, 2017 Level 1 "update")

Re: Upcoming Debian 9 Update (9.4)
Question: what is the preferred method of getting Firefox Quantum?
I tried Apt Pinning and had trouble.
Most reliable for me, so far, has been to add the Sid and Buster repos, install FF with synaptic, then disable Sid and Buster
it works but is prone to Human Error (I make lots)
