This is a Manjaro HowTo but the principle is the same on Debian.

HiRes audio playback on Debian
I am thinking about writing a short HowTo on this topic. If people are interested. I have searched these forums and found very little on this topic.
Firstly, I do not care if you think no one can tell the difference.
I spent a lot of time using pw-top in a terminal and my SMSL USB DAC with a display to test and verify all the ideas that I could before finally finding one solution that actually works. The standard Pipewire config just pumps everything out at 48kHz and resamples sound to fit ...

Re: Mini PC for Debian 12
I have a slightly older ASUS PN50, AMD R7-4700U, WiFi6 with a 1GB M.2 drive and 16GBs of RAM. Everything is recognised and works and it drives the built in Radeon graphics card. I am running Debian Stable. It is a superb general purpose computer and it runs a 4K 27" monitor and an external USB DAC (Audioengine D1) and Edifier speakers.
There are newer versions of this device.

Re: RAW photo thumbnails in Buster or newer
Thanks. Interesting approach but that would take a bit of massaging to work with RAW files. The above just automates it when you click into a folder with Nautilus or Thunar.GarryRicketson wrote:I use a little script:Very simple really, change"png" to JPG or whatever image format it is.Code: Select all
for file in *png; do new_file=`echo $file | sed 's/.png$//'` convert -resize 25% $file $new_file-tmb.png done
modify as needed.

Tumbler does not work for RAW photo files. Even with all the extra bits installed.Dai_trying wrote:Have you tried tumbler? RAW photo thumbnails in Buster or newer
Traditionally RAW photo thumbnail files were created by the package gnome-raw-thumbnailer. Unfortunately this package is history and did suffer a few limitations. It is not in the Buster repos.
There is a solution that I think is actually better but must be created manually. It works for Nautilus and Thunar and probably all the other file managers. It will also work on any Linux distro.
1 Install ufraw
apt-get install ufraw
2 Create a file called ufraw.thumbnailer in /usr/share ...

Select any other desktop during the Buster install and you get Synaptic. Working just nicely on my notebook with Buster and Xfce4.

Gnome Shell adding the Euro symbol to a US keyboard
All the old methods you will find via a Google search no longer work. The Gnome devs have made it harder and harder to do this one simple thing that is absolutely necessary to many many Gnome users.
In Gnome Shell 3.16 you can fire up Gnome Tweak Tool and select "Add Currency Symbols to ...." and nothing happens. Why? Because Tweak Tool has no option for third level compose. Many of us in countries that use the Dollar symbol for our own currency still need a way of quickly inputting other ...

Re: scanner fail with "invalid argument"
Kernel 4.1 does not fix the issue.
I have left xHCI off and thus made all the motherboard ports USB 2. Scanner works perfectly. I have added a no name PCIe USB 3 card with a VLI chip. The card has a header for my case internal connector and two rear ports. The 4.1 kernel recognises and drives the USB 3 chip on the card - so now I have my scanner and USB 3. A $30 hardware solution, or perhaps a work around, to a software issue.

Re: What is it like to run an unstable system?
An old thread now but no one mentioned Siduction or Aptosid. Both of these are Sid distros and their forums are a great resource for upgrade warnings and fixes. It is still Debian but with a few extra bits and a like minded community.
Edit: Looks like Aptosid has imploded. Siduction still going strong.

Re: move to gnome3 from xfce4
Might be too late, but I would just install pulseaudio volume control and use it to configure sound. There should then be not much difference between Gnome and Xfce4. If it works then add a launcher to the Xfce4 panel for the pulseaudo volume control for easy adjustments. Also install Gnome Alsamixer as it can fix a lot of issues.
You can always add Gnome later if that does not work for you.

Update June 8, 2015
After recent updates even VueScan has stopped working. Turning off xHCI mode is the only answer.

Update 29 May 2015 - running Sid with a 4.0 kernel and latest versions of Sane. The error still occurs. I can get a single page to work sometimes, but not repeated scans. Turning off xHCI mode still "fixes" the issue.

Re: No Sound from USB Sound Card (AudioBox VSL)
The simplest thing to try is to go into the sound applet and change the output device. If you do not have one - like if you are using Xfce4, then just install the Pulseaudio Volume control. Gnome Alsamixer is also a very useful tool

Re: fitbit on debian help
If you have an Android phone then you do not need the FitBit software. The dongle provided is just a Bluetooth USB connection.
On the phone install the FitBit app and pair with your FitBit. The Android app will take care of updating the FitBit on first connection. You do not need any computer - Debian or otherwise. I have not tried this with an iPhone but would presume the same thing applies.
The FitBit will regularly sync with the phone and upload to their server. On your Debian box you just ...

Re: scanner fail with "invalid argument"
Still no solution. Bugs reports are still current and the devs have tried hard.
There is one other workaround for those who want to just use their scanner. Pay $US29.95 and buy a copy of VueScan. VueScan must bypass the normal libs somehow. It works fine for me.
There is a trial version available if you want to see if it works for you ....

scanner fail with "invalid argument"
This error is very difficult to solve, but also appears widespread across the Debian universe and also others like Arch and Fedora.
I use a Canon LiDE 110 scanner and it has always worked very well under Linux. This same problem affects many other scanners not just the 110.
Run any front end like xSane and after initially appearing to be OK it will fail with an Invalid Argument error.
But, it does not happen to everyone. I have several machines to experiment with so I did. I also used Debian ...

As an aside for next time ...
If you are running on a small partition (and you seem to be) then one command to always remember is (run as su) apt-get clean
or as devils_debian used above apt-get autoclean the result is the same.
apt-get autoremove is a different command that removes lost files that are no longer needed and thus, most of the time, does not free up much space.
