Re: Debian Mate: is it possible to re-map the F1 key for terminal use?

Unfortunately, I can only speak for the Xfce4-terminal, within it's settings menu there is an option to release the F1 key.

Re: Debian Mate: is it possible to re-map the F1 key for terminal use?

You might want to tell us which desktop environment and which terminal program you use.

Re: [Software] KDE backup - how does it work?

In my opinion, using rsync or one of its derivates is probably the best for backing up. Be sure to keep your hands off tools like Borg or DejaDup. With these, you always need the complete chain of unbroken backups from the initial backup on, and, equally bad, you probably need the exact version of t...

Re: Add user in graphic mode on xfce

Installing gnome-system-tools or the more recent mate-user-admin should give you the graphical user management tool. In Debian, neither of them is installed by default, but you will find them with

Code: Select all

apt search gnome-system-tools

Re: Debian Live Image (MATE) has KDE settings on it ... ?

I personally cannot see any problem at all with having some libraries or settings tools on my computer that I don't really need or use. So what! Might perhaps only be a problem if one's storage capacity is extremely limited, but in that case one would surely have other problems as well. In Germany w...

Re: Debian Live Image (MATE) has KDE settings on it ... ?

I am running Bookworm with Xfce , installed from the Live ISO in German. Here, "KDE Systemeinstellungen" with Plasma settings is also present. I have installed several programs that use QT. Maybe the KDE settings come from these installations. In a Virtual Machine, I have Bookworm with Xfc...

Re: Would you recommend Debian to a brand new Linux user? Why/Why not?

To me, it was easy to recommend Debian because of my brother's experience. He is 75, lives in the Philippines, and 2 years ago his Macbook broke. He only knew MacOS, nothing else, for 35 years. A new Mac was far too expensive for him, and Windows not acceptable. So I helped him install Xubuntu (unfo...

Re: Would you recommend Debian to a brand new Linux user? Why/Why not?

Maybe Mint is more user friendly than Debian, but Mint is derived from Ubuntu is derived from Debian. Why not take the original? Two things I would NOT recommend are 1. install Debian with the Standard Installer from the Standard ISO and 2. install the preferred Gnome. Instead, I recommend: Install ...

Re: Transition from Kubuntu to Debian KDE?

Firefox is able to import profile data without any import/export feature. There is just a handful of files to be copied from one profile to another, and this is well dodumented by Mozilla at https://support.mozilla.org/de/kb/benutzerprofile-mit-ihren-persoenlichen-daten (sorry I just have a link to ...

Re: [O/S] Why doesn't Debian offer preinstalled desktop environments?

I think you're missing something. The Debian installation ISO that comes with the "Debian installer" includes a couple of desktop environments which you can choose from, and there are many Debian live ISOs, each containining the "Calamares" installer and just one of the many desk...

Re: Transition from Kubuntu to Debian KDE?

Transition worked very fine, in my case from Xubuntu to Debian with Xfce, installed from the Live ISO as soon as Bookworm arrived. Just had to copy my home folder and solve two small things: it was a bit tricky to convince the NVIDIA driver to work properly, and to get the Firefox profile to work on...

Re: Portable install on external SSD with (or without) UEFI - Possible?

As far as I have seen, the purpose of a Debian Live ISO is exactly to be startable on every computer (so far) that Debian can be installed on. And to me, it seems to be fully functional. Apart from the speed loss caused by the USB connection, why should it be less performant than a "real" ...

Re: Portable install on external SSD with (or without UEFI) - Possible?

Another alternative I managed to install is the follwing: 1. Prepare your external drive with Ventoy, making it persistent, use only as much space as you need, and leave as much as you can free. 2. Cope a Debian live ISO to the Ventoy partition. Being persistent, you can install or delete software a...

Additionally, after having entered the root shell, you can add your user to the sudoers file with

Code: Select all

usermod -aG sudo <your user name>
After this, you can 'sudo' in your normal user shell.

Re: [Discussion] Get Debian look like more than Win7?

You may first want to try alternative desktop environments from a Live ISO without installing. Later on, you can install Debian right from the Live session. The calamares installer is very user friendly. It might even be possible to only install the other DE parallel to Gnome, but with this, I have ...

Re: [Discussion] Get Debian look like more than Win7?

I fully agree. Xfce easily will fulfill all your needs. It is highly configurable and flexible yet not overloaded with options. Besides that, you can have as many panels as you want and place them wherever you like. There are lots of appearance themes to adjust the look and feel, colors, or the shap...
