Re: Logout problems
I have to login every time as well, but I use Temporary Containers in a Firefox-derived browser, so it might be on my end.

Re: [Off-Topic] Help wanted: Writing a beginner's book to Debian
Late AF and the book might be finished by now but an interesting post so I wanted to add my $0.02: Feedback on the structure and content Underlined additions are suggested chapters. Bullet point are sub-chapters Part 1: Introduction to Debian History and Philosophy of Debian Advantages of using Debi...

Re: [Solved] laptop does not shutdown
Dredging up an old thread in case my solution helps someone stuck in the mud... I was getting the same three networking-related services delaying shutdowns on my desktop. I finally remembered that I had recently inserted a cheap wireless USB adapter in the back of my device. Removing it stopped my d...

Re: Would you recommend Debian to a brand new Linux user? Why/Why not?
Personally, I'm a fan and had used Debian sparingly on both ChromeOS & WSL before transitioning to Debian as my daily driver last summer. I haven't tried another distro (and don't plan on doing so), but the transition was stressful for me, and makes me second guess whether it's the right path fo...

Would you recommend Debian to a brand new Linux user? Why/Why not?
A hypothetical I thought about when browsing /r/Debian... and seeing every 'Should I use Debian or <insert other Distro here>?' question is answered w/ Debian resoundingly. Where do you fall on the spectrum re: introducing newbies to Linux? Would Debian be your recommendation or something else?

Re: Pinpoint what is causing frequent crashes: CPU vs Memory
No crashes in the last few days. My current theory is that RAM was being overwhelmed, and by adding SWAP, it gives me a bit more buffer room and a better holding place for processes in the background. 8GB RAM seems like it should be enough as it is, but all's well that ends well 🤷🏾♂️ Closing this o...

Re: [Discussion] What do you wish you had known years ago?
I regularly saw tutorials on using man to better understand system/user-installed packages, but it took the better part of a year to realize that man has a much wider scope and is typically the best (and quickest) reference for config files (ie: man freshclam.conf), explanations of Linux tools (ie: ...

Re: Pinpoint what is causing frequent crashes: CPU vs Memory
I just installed the latest clamav .deb file from their official website and I increased my swap so that it went from 1GB -> 8GB (which matches my RAM).
I am cautiously optimistic and will update when I have a bit more time w/ the updated setup

Re: Pinpoint what is causing frequent crashes: CPU vs Memory
How exactly does the crash manifest itself? The cursor lag increases to a crawl. If I'm quick enough and start closing out any apps/tabs, then the issue reverts itself. If I take too long, then it will auto-close app(s) itself. Both CPU and RAM appear to be in short supply. I'd suggest reverting yo...

[Solved] Pinpoint what is causing frequent crashes: CPU vs Memory
Lately, my laptop regularly crashes whenever I have ~10 tabs open in my browser or if I have 2-3 apps that do heavy lifting. This rarely happened before (like once every two months?) but now occurs 2-3x a day. I have made two different adjustments to my laptop recently and can't determine which to r...

Re: Which laptop do YOU run Debian on?
I have a mid-tier Chromebook from 2020/2021 that I installed Debian on through the chrultrabook docs . What I like the most about it is that it feels more sleek/modern than a lot of Windows PC's out there and costs a fraction of the price. I've been using Chromebooks as an inexpensive alternative fo...

Re: [Software] Kate not finding LSPs
Good morning jmgibson1981, Thank you for your reply. I have managed to install clangd-14 but neither Synaptics nor sudo apt-get install can find the bash-language-server. Is there some other way/tool that I should be using to install the bash-language-server ? Stuart [12:27:23 LSP Client Warning]...

Re: [Software] All things being equal, which is more privacy-friendly: snap pkg or .deb pkg?
Appreciate all of the comments everyone. It is definitely a reminder that Debian isn't overly opinionated, but there are a variety of unique perspectives on acceptable risks. There are people who only use packages in the official repo, people who don't use containers, people who don't use anything c...

Re: [Software] All things being equal, which is more privacy-friendly: snap pkg or .deb pkg?
I appreciate the responses so quickly! I want to preface by saying that I think that I might have done a disservice to responses in two areas: By mentioned that the company that created the snap/.deb packages was reputable, I meant that I know they are not pushing malware or trying to access my bank...

[Solved] All things being equal, which is more privacy-friendly: snap pkg or .deb pkg?
In this instance, neither are a part of the official Debian repo, but they are both available via the reputable company's website. The company initially only had a snap app, but within the last few weeks released a .deb version which I jumped at as a Debian user I have installed the .deb and and com...

Re: Clock is temporarily off after every wake-from-sleep/boot
@m4c-attack: Did you sort it out ? Yup. I followed your advice to the tee and then gave it a few days of booting to be sure. There was a brief moment where it looked like it reverted but I haven't been able to replicate it since. Kinda blows my mind that you have knowledge of something as seemingly...

Re: Clock is temporarily off after every wake-from-sleep/boot
Responses in bold Slow connecting to router/internet? No net = no NTP service. You might be onto something. There's also a few seconds delay before the ethernet kicks in I've found. I wonder if there's a logjam in systemd that is cascading down to all the dependencies? Hello, What is your computer ?...
