Re: Issue installing Firefox from Mozilla repo

I've been running the ESR version as a portable app on Xfce, and have not had any problem that way. I just extract it to a "Portable" folder in my home directory and make a launcher in the Whisker "start" menu. Then set it as default and keep a backup of my "...user/.mozilla...

Re: synaptic

I'm running v12.6 with Xfce, no problem.

Created a root password?
Put user in sudoers group?

Add user to sudoers (correct the "YourUserName" part):

Code: Select all

su -
usermod -aG sudo YourUserName

Re: Should I recommend Debian to a friend who has no Linux experience?

As much as I'd like to point every new user to Debian (I don't care for the middle-men), there are just too many things that require...figuring out. Like the install itself being "corrupted": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrRT4rmmoNQ Then there are common things that won't work out of th...

Re: Installation difference between ISO and live

I don't know why they are different, but they surely are, and it's NOT cool. The Live version contains a lot of junk the "net" versions don't have (and maybe a bit of vice versa) and if my memory serves me, it (Live DVD) took up about ~4 extra GB on my drive right after install for some un...

Except, you can make multiple drives boot independent of each other so if one fails or is not present (say you reinstall or restore a backup image), the other still works.

Re: Installing Debian 12 on a second SSD on a Windows 10 PC

I run Legacy BIOS and MBR drives because EFI/GPT always causes me grief. Windows installed on let's call it Drive A, Debian to Dive B. That said, I just install Debian to Drive B and GRUB on the MBR of Drive B so Windows and Debian are completely independent as far as booting. I can set my BIOS to b...

Re: thundwerbirdmail 115

Call me weird, but I like to just get Firefox-esr and Thunderbird (I hate the 115 version, stayed with 102.x) directly from the FTP, extract them to a "portable" folder and just run them directly as portable. I don't "install" them at all and I completely remove the "stock i...

Re: Help making desktop launcher (Xfce) for a game + vkbasalt

That worked, Thank you very much! I totally spaced the first time and included the "exec=" bit in the "edit launcher" dialog, which would double it like "Exec=Exec=env ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 blah blah blah".

[Solved] Help making desktop launcher (Xfce) for a game + vkbasalt

I figured out how to get vkbasalt (adds fxaa, smaa, antialiasing to a game) to pretty up Serious Sam games by using "ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 /home/username/Portable/SamTSE/Bin/SeriousSam" in the terminal. I would like to create a launcher/shortcut on the desktop or start menu to do the same thin...

I do.
The stall is not a huge problem or anything, now that I know to look for it. Just a curiosity mostly. Curious why it does this on Debian, but I'd not seen it before on other distros.

[Software] Synaptic stopping and waiting for input?

Several packages, not all, will stop until I expand the "details" section and see: "Are you sure you want to install/upgrade the above packages? [Y/n/?/...] "

Never seen that before. Is there a way to get it to just do it without input?

Re: Debian 12 show boot select screen

I'll take a shot here. Boot into Debian (and Manjaro if needed) and edit "/etc/default/grub" file and add or modify the following (without info/notes in parentheses): GRUB_DEFAULT=saved GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true (makes auto selection be the last one booted) GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false (makes ...

Re: [Installation] efi: error ident-mapping new memmap?

do what? Motherboard is set to CSM=enabled so legacy MBR or UEFI GPT boot will work. Debian is installed on an external USB, 1TB HDD in GPT (UEFI), with GRUB on an EFI partition on that drive. Windows is installed on a different internal SSD that is MBR (BIOS) mode. The two drives are independent a...

Re: [O/S] Debian 11.7 Xfce Stable Volume Control, Configuration Tab, issue? TIA

When mine kept switching to an unwanted audio device, I had to modify (with text editor of your choice) /etc/pulse/default.pa and comment out all modules that start with module-switch-on-* by adding " # " in front of it. module-switch-on-port-available <-- this one is usually the offender ...

[Installation] efi: error ident-mapping new memmap?

Does anyone know what it means if during boot "efi: error ident-mapping new memmap" is displayed? Seems harmless, but I am curious. I tried adding "add_efi_memmap" to the grub file, but it made no difference. Booting Debian 12 from net-install on external usb hard drive with Ryze...

Could not tell you how to fix it The links posted by 4D696B65 explain exactly how to fix this problem. Links to links to more links to descriptions of removing some random thing and when I do that errors out too. No thanks! I'll just move along elsewhere. I installed Debian 12 three days ago and al...

Re: [Discussion] So ... Debian 12 ... Nightmare or Glorious Bliss? (or you just wish to post ITT with ellipsis ...)

My experience was: 1. Could not install because the installer loads up all corrupted . Worked around that by using 'vga=normal fb=false' resulting in a working non-graphical installer. 2. Tried to update and got stuck with this issue . It's basically bricked itself. Once that was all sorted out thou...
