Re: [Discussion] How I came to Linux and Debian
And it is somewhat painful to me to now have non-free firmware in the installation media included by default, but I understand that this makes things much easier for a lot of people. It always bugged me that the FSF didn't accept Debian as a free software distribution. Now it is clearer than ever b...

Re: Would you recommend Debian to a brand new Linux user? Why/Why not?
Brand new linux user So we can assume that they have already expressed a desire to explore Linux, and have even taken some steps on their own? If not, I wouldn't recommend any Linux to them. Having established their preexisting interest, I can move on to the main part of the question: Would I recom...

Re: Can't get login screen after upgrading to Debian12
I manged to get to a command line after following advice given on various old forum posts, ... I don't want to have to wipe my hard drive by doing a clean install because the file back-up I did apparently failed, so I'm starting to panic about not being able to fix this. No need for alarm, as long ...

Re: Can't get login screen after upgrading to Debian12
I know how how to get to the above menu, but what do I do once I get there? When I highlight either choice and hit E I get list of nonsensical phrases, but none that begin with "grub..." as mentioned previously. Sorry, I shouldn't be advising from memory alone. It turns out, that is when ...

Re: Can't get login screen after upgrading to Debian12
I don't access GRUB very often, so my memory of it is fuzzy. Either pressing Esc (or Tab?) should bring you to the following screen:
From there, the E key will allow you to edit the entries in a vim like editor.

Re: Can't get login screen after upgrading to Debian12
Disclaimer: I am speculating as to what the issue is, based on the provided information. That is good that GRUB is showing. We can rule out more serious issues being the cause. I am speculating , based on prior experience, that something might be broken with your display stack. We can test this by ...

Re: [Software] Google Drive. KDE, Dolphin?
There have been several versions of kio-gdrive since Bookworm's release. It is possible (likely, IMO) that Google have changed something on their end which breaks this. Unfortunately, I do not see that kio-gdrive has any backports available. You could try building a recent release maybe? From their ...

Re: Can't get login screen after upgrading to Debian12
Do you see the GRUB screen at any point in the process? Or it just goes straight to the blinking cursor without any other display? Also, I know this is probably "too little, too late", but how did you upgrade to Bookworm? People often pass around the notion that one can just change sources...

Looking at the design of that laptop, having three fans, it seems the designers knew that the equipment would be getting rather hot.

You are not alone. I think it is fairly widely understood (in the techie community) that smartphones are user hostile in just about every meaningful way.

Re: there is no full support for AMD APUs and GPUs in Debian Trixie or testing.
The party primarily responsible for supporting AMD graphics is AMD themselves. I may have been one of those commenters who previously replied about ignoring the missing firmware messages. Apt complains about "missing amdgpu firmware" ever since the day I started using Debian. And as AMD ad...

Re: [Video] Cheese only works with sudo
When logging into your Gnome session, try selecting the X.org/X11 display server option. Does it work okay there?
Also consider launching Cheese from the terminal so that you might see any errors or warnings printed.

Re: [Off-Topic] Help wanted: Writing a beginner's book to Debian
There are many more Linux distros than the number of versions of Windows that have been released. Each with their own differences and philosophies. Good luck distro hopping, you'll have to re-learn so much from scratch. Linux is one of the most fractured OSes out there, forgive me for blatantly ign...

Re: [Off-Topic] Help wanted: Writing a beginner's book to Debian
These people are just lazy, period. Linux generally isn't hard to learn if you're committed, but it does require more dedication than mainstream Windows, so this dedication should be matched with a willingness to search for the info that will aid in learning it. IMO Windows is more difficult to lea...

Re: [Discussion] How I came to Linux and Debian
Why the hell would sane people want to use a computer by typing strange, convoluted, and esoteric spells into a black box? That actually makes it sound pretty cool. My journey shares some similarities. Windows --> Tried Ubuntu but couldn't stand Unity --> Linux Mint --> Debian with Cinnamon DE --> ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Rant: Most distro system requirements are ridiculous
I'm still kinda okay with most distros not supporting i386 or i586 but the stupid x86_64-v2 crap is just planned obsolescence, the performance improvements over the original x86_64 binaries are next to nonexistent, sometimes the performance is even worse! This new versioning is definitely a thinly ...

Re: I graduated in computer technology, but I have no idea what I want to do.
I'm still evaluating whether there exists any role in tech that would be for me. I'd gone to school, gotten the certs and degrees, worked at a number of computer service-y places. But, ultimately, I couldn't force myself to be enthusiastic about supporting proprietary (predatory) technology. So much...

Re: Alternatives to UFW
Thanks @Uptorn. OpenSnitch sounds promising. Does it use iptables of nftables? And to install it do we have to compile it from a source code? OR do we have to install it from its own repository, i.e. add its repository into the sources files of dpkg? It uses nftables and is already available in the...
