Re: Latest Debian Stable won't install on Asus Prime B450M-A2

A web search suggests the error

AMD-Vi: Event logged [IO_PAGE_FAULT

is related to IOMMU.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=275425

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=792634#p792634

You could try changing IOMMU options in the BIOS.

As the errors mention snd_hda_intel, the ultimate cause could be an issue with that driver and the motherboard and kernel.

Thank you! That was the problem. Disabling IOMMU in the BIOS eliminated all the errors except the first one ...

friendlysalmon88 wrote: 2024-04-10 22:32 To avoid these kind of issues I keep my Work Station on cse/lagacy mode instead of UFEI as it allows me to have virtually painless installation and upgrade paths haven't had any where near the issues the the OP has mentioned. On the other hand I've also got a newer ThinkPad X1 Carbon on which I'm stuck using UFEI so I just account for a 512 MB esr/uefi partition at the beginning of my partitioning scheeme.
I've tried it with and without UEFI. No difference.

Ardouos wrote: 2024-04-10 22:07 What BIOS version are you running?
Have you tried factory resetting your BIOS/EFI?

Does the PC come with any peripherals? I would strip the pc to its core and see if the same error occurs. Even taking out DIMMs if you can.
I don't know the BIOS version, and I can't look it up right now, but it was the latest one for that board on the ASUS website. I have not tried resetting the BIOS...
I bought the board and cpu as a bundle. It's a home-built PC, with no peripherals hooked up yet.

Re: Latest Debian Stable won't install on Asus Prime B450M-A2

It seems to definitely be a kernel issue, as I was able to install Debian 11 with no problem right up until disk partitioning, at which point it couldn't detect any disks. I guess I'm just SOL until the kernel catches up to my hardware.
I feel like I'm back in 2005 installing Etch (Testing) because Sarge didn't recognize most of my hardware.

Re: Latest Debian Stable won't install on Asus Prime B450M-A2

Ok, so I tried Trixie...no change.
Tried different USB drives....no change.
Burned iso to DVD and booted from that....no change.

Below is the screens of errors that show in order. After about 2 minutes or so it flashes the message "starting frame buffer", then it goes to the first setup screen where you select the language. About 75% of the time it freezes there. Sometimes, I can get a couple of screens in before it either freezes or gives some other error. Windows 10 still installs without ...

(Solved) Latest Debian Stable won't install on Asus Prime B450M-A2

Hello....I don't know where to start here. I'm not new to Debian, been using it exclusively since Sarge in 2005, and installed it to literally dozens of desktops and laptops over the years, but this thing is kicking my butt.
Specs:
Asus Prime B450M-A2 mainboard
AMD Ryzen 5 4500 CPU
Radeon HD 5450 video card.
500Gig SSD and 1TB hardrive.

I can install Windows 10 without issue, but putting the Debian USB stick in, it boots into the initial screen where you pick the install method just fine, then ...

Re: No HDMI output

After more research, it seems that what I have is a hybrid system, and my graphics processor (nVidia RTX 4050) is not currently supported by the Optimus driver or whatever they call it. Maybe in a future kernel or Debian release. Just goes to show the importance of research BEFORE buying....OTOH, it's hard to research something you've never even heard of.

  • Press the F2 (or whatever) at startup to get into the CMOS setup
  • Select Advanced
  • Select the Display mode and change it to Discrete GPU only
  • Save and exit...
Gaming laptops sometimes cannot dynamically switch between the 2 GPUs. I don't have a laptop like this but I've seen people running Linux on similar setups. If that option isn't in the CMOS I don't know.
I tried that. It won't even boot into the desktop, but hangs on an error, that I don't remember.

I hadn't thought of that, but it does work fine when booting into Windows.....so I don't think it is mechanically/electrically at fault.

Re: No HDMI output

So, after a great deal of research, it seems that the Intel hardware controls the HDMI port, and the nVidia hardware runs the display. I have tried about everything I can think of, ie: newer kernel, nvidia drivers, and so on, and nothing works. It may be that my memory is faulty, and I never had this piece of junk connected to the TV, and there is currently no way to do so without some god-level hacking that I simply am incapable of accomplishing. This will be the last "gaming" laptop that I ...

[Solved] No HDMI output

Hello,
I have an Acer Nitro 5 laptop with a pretty generic install of Debian 12.4, no special nVidia drivers or anything. It has the geforce rtx 4050 chip. It appears it also has an Intel video controller in the chipset:
0000:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-P GT1 [UHD Graphics] (rev 0c)
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation AD107M [GeForce RTX 4050 Max-Q / Mobile] (rev a1)
I could have sworn I had used this computer in a dual monitor setup ...

Re: CUPS no longer sees my network printers

How did you set up the printers?

Both printers are driverless enabled - they use Airprint - and a print queue would have been set up in Bookworm automatically, no driver required.

This is a fairly recent change. Please check the following page. Apologies if you are doing this already. It may be that you are fighting against the system if you are still using old approaches to setting up the printers.

It could have been a router issue with Bonjour ...

[Solved] CUPS no longer sees my network printers

Hello everyone. I have a strange problem that I am unsure where to start with. I have a fairly new Bookworm install, and everything was working fine. I am not new to Debian, having switched in 2005, and I've dealt with a lot, but networking issues have always been my weakness. Anyway, I went to print a document, and had no printers anymore. I went to localhost:631, and nothing was listed as a network printer. Blank. I have an HP Laserjet 1109w, and an Epson ET 2850. All have worked in the past ...

Re: For how many years have you been using GNU/Linux?

I started with Sarge in 2005 if memory serves, then tried Fedora, Suse, and Mandrake for a few days each, then back to Debian, but Testing (Etch) this time.. Been a Debian user since then.
