Shame-on-whoever for sure. Very sad indeed. Locking a thread to discuss alternative OS in the off-topic area - silly.

Use MPlayer or SMPlayer to save CPU cycles. The performance difference is noticeable, VLC is now rarely used on my systems.I went able to play the 720p demo, with mpv, vlc and totem, all of them played with lost sync audio but VLC, which from time to time dropped some frames to keep the the speed and not lagging, the whole time CPU at 100%.

Re: operating systems without systemd
Presently lots of options and hopefully it won't come to this, BusyBox-based distributions may be the last left standing for systemd avoidance a few years down the road:
https://git.busybox.net/busybox/commit/ ... ed5f3bb346remove systemd support
systemd people are not willing to play nice with the rest of the world.
Therefore there is no reason for the rest of the world to cooperate with them.

Re: Reviving printer cartridges
Don't like inkjet technology either or printers in general but it's what i presently have at home so keep it running. Best to print a 1/2 - 1 page of black and coloured text weekly to keep the cartridges and printheads working, trivial ink use compared to tossing a next-fo-full clogged cartridge.
Things that have worked for me:
* Stand up the cartridge in shallow hot water/ammonia mix overnight to soak the printhead, wipe clean and test.
* Isopropyl alcohol and a clean cotton cloth to clean the ...

Personally not keen on the latest Debian offerings either, another topic. Iceweasel in my Debian Wheezy installs is very stable, aside from getting more bloated with every release. [edit] It is doubtful Debian administration or any developers will read your post.

Re: Is debian recommended for old netbooks
My HP Mini 110 runs Debian Wheezy LXDE okay, sluggish running Iceweasel with several tabs. Slower processor primarily then limited RAM. Believe your system is upgradeable to 2gb, personally wouldn't bother. More funner to leave hardware alone, set up leaner system. For hardware maintenance, you'll probably find a youtube disassembly video.

interesting, this seems to be something like Windows' System Restore. but isn't any simpler way of just downgrading packages to their versions before the update?

Re: Workstation does not boot when I add RAM
Running Debian with 7x4Gb ram, wouldn't worry about the broken slot.larry77 wrote:
Right now I am using my machine with 7x4Gb of ram, and it is fine.
Something is wrong with a memory slot and it looks like there is little to do short of replacing the mother board (which I am not going to do now).
System may run well for years without expending more money or effort.

Re: Workstation does not boot when I add RAM
If all RAM modules work in other slots then probably motherboard issue, not incompatability. One of my old motherboards has a broken slot, bummer. Use bright light to inspect slot for obvious dirt/issues. Blow or vacuum slot and remove/re-seat RAM module several times to create fresh contacts. Sometimes the work area is tight so ensure the RAM clicks/locks into place properly at both ends when re-seating.
I would run memtest through one long pass for each individual module, if error(s) return ...

Obsolete, near future? Of course not.
IMO touchpads, touch and tiny screens will never replace the precision and productivity of a traditional computing environment.

Perform regular backups and do it right . Personally don't bother with OS backups as Linux is generally fixable and a dead drive is a good excuse for an update, just /home configs and personal data. Stuff happens...even to the pros.
